Magic Touch slips past Slippery

Magic Touch and Slippery When Wet each reported being neck & neck, so the question was whether to award both equal first. Deciding which boat is ahead is one of the difficulties sometimes encountered in Pursuit Races. The Sailing Sec awarded Magic Touch 1st place and Slippery When Wet 2nd, so a brief word of explanation is warranted.

The two boats were sailing Southwards on the Western side of the North Lake heading for Mark 10 which is close to White Cross Bay on the East side of the lake. The wind was South Easterly. Something along the lines of the picture below: -

Although they were neck and neck on the water, the boat to the East was closer to the next mark than the boat to the West. The closer they are the tighter the margin of course, but the principle will be the same. Credit to Slippery When Wet for being sporting about it! Hopefully the preceding explains the point - feedback (polite) always welcome of course :-)
